Is there an expected time for the Mashiach to appear?

  • There was confusion about the timing and appearance of the Mashiach.
  • There has been confusion over how all the prophecies would be fulfilled at once, or that Jesus did not yet fullfill ALL the prophecies.
  • There is prophecy in the Torah as well as in the Talmud by Rabbinical scholars about when the Messiah was expected to appear.

The sceptre shall not depart from Judah, nor a lawgiver from between his feet, until Shiloh come; and unto him shall the gathering of the people be.

Genises 49:10 (KJV)

  • The above verse is explaining that the reigning power of the Jewish Sanhedrin would not be dissolved or taken away until the Mashiach came.
  • However this power to rule being removed happened when Herod the Great, who was not Jewish took over and reigned in Jerusalem.
  • The Talmud records this and even scholars then felt that the time had come but the Messiah had not appeared...
  • Sanhedrin 98b in the Talmud names one of the names of Messiah as Shiloh.

"All the predestined dates for the Redemption have passed, and the matter now depends only on repentance and good deeds."

Sanhedrin 97 B

  • The Talmud again mentions that 40 years before the destruction of the temple the Sanhedrin was were exiled (Babylonian Talmud - Sanhedrin 41a)
  • If the sceptre has already departed, and the Talmudists were aware that the time had passed, how then could the Mashiach not shown up?
